Does Fiber Have Superpowers?

Still very much in loveFiber is currently being studied for its heart protective effects. Northwestern University published a study in 2012 that highlighted the importance of making critical heart healthy lifestyle changes during our younger years.*

The study analyzed data of 11,000 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and found that young (20- 39 years) and middle-aged adults (40-59 years) who had higher intakes of fiber had a lower lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease. Ensuring adequate intake now, they concluded, could potentially protect the heart later in life.

Fiber is found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, so adding these to our diet can possibly add years to our lives. The American Heart Association recommends 25g or more of dietary fiber per day. Based on these findings, we vote yes on the superpowers!
